BiographY
ANNE ETCHEGOYEN is today considered a reference in Basque singing with her voice that is at once soft, "airy" and powerful.
In a rather male-dominated Basque singing scene, in her thirteen-year career, Anne Etchegoyen has established her musical universe and contributed to making Basque music more accessible, developing a wider audience every day through her records and concerts, in churches and performance halls. She has become a key artist in her region and the only Basque artist to convey her culture beyond its borders.
Today she has numerous performances on stage, both in France and abroad: the Olympia, the Casino de Paris, the Alhambra, concerts in Corsica, Brittany, Vendée, churches and chapels in Biarritz, Anglet, Cap Ferret, Montpellier, tours in Argentina and the United States, particularly meeting the Basque community.
The success of her project "Les Voix Basques" released in 2013 by Smart/Sony, which sold more than 80,000 copies with a music video with more than 4 million views (a first for a song in Basque) led her to give numerous concerts on prestigious stages in the Southern Basque Country (Spanish side) and in Spain, such as the Kursaal and the Teatro Victoria Eugenia in San Sebastian, the Guggenheim esplanade, the BBK hall, and the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao, Santiago de Compostela, Castellón.
His previous album, "Compostelle, Du Pays Basque à Saint-Jacques," inspired by his pilgrimage from his family home to Santiago de Compostela in 2015, was released in 2017 by Crédo/Universal. He recounted his introspection through the landscapes and the miles, translated into traditional and folk sounds. This album was a success, selling over 10,000 copies.
In 2020, Anne Etchegoyen released "Emazte" (= woman in Basque) on Decca/Universal, in which she evokes women through around ten songs, in the most beautiful aspects of women, such as motherhood, love, passion for a loved one or a cause, transmission; but also domestic violence, parity, or even sexual and sexist violence against women, as in the single NO ES NO, recorded as a duet with Itziar Ituño (singer and actress from the Southern Basque Country, La Casa de Papel, Intimidad, etc.).
In 2021 and 2022, despite the uncertain period linked to covid 19, Anne was able to give numerous concerts in the Southern Basque Country (Spanish side) and every summer in France - in the Basque Country and elsewhere - notably on the occasion of the Festival of Basque Castles and the South-West, of which she has been a producer since its launch in 2018. In the summer of 2022, she was chosen to perform the Basque opening song for the Bayonne festivals on the balcony of the town hall, in front of thousands of people, as well as for the Sunday morning concert at the arenas, during the Pamplona festivals in front of nearly 20,000 people.
In late 2022 and early 2023, she will present the documentary Ainarak (=the swallows), the result of a co-production between two Spanish Basque productions, for cinemas and ETB. It tells the story of these young girls and women, who from the Navarrese and Aragonese valleys, crossed the Pyrenees on foot to go and work in the espadrille factories in Mauléon between 1880 and 1936.
FESTIVAL
In her new album FESTA (= "party" in Basque), Anne Etchegoyen celebrates the festival by performing popular songs known to all party lovers and sung in chorus at festivals in our towns and villages, by families, and during our beloved 3rd half-time. As well as two compositions including the single with the same title as the album, Festa .
According to Anne, the two-year deprivation of celebrations due to Covid has highlighted the social, intergenerational aspect of celebrations.
Who says celebration, says sharing and it is in this sense that she invited some essential artist friends of Basque music, such as Pier Paul Berzaitz, Niko Etxart, Gérard Luc, Jean-Pierre Dumoulin of the Gaiteros du Roi Léon, etc.
But also the singer of Catalan origin, Cali, for a Basque-Catalan duet, which is part of the approach she has started for more visibility of music in regional languages.
Finally, for the composition Maria , it is with the gipsy-latin group Alma Loca, that Anne offers us a luminous duet.
Musically, as on stage, the titles are carried by bases of folk, classical and flamenco guitars, embellished by modern and elegant arrangements, to serve a Hispano-folk universe carried by the voice both soft and powerful of Anne Etchegoyen.
The Basque singer's mature album, superb, at once elegant, warm and unifying, which will make us want to put our scarves back on and go down to the village squares to meet friends and family for a moment of "joy"!
